LATHER founder and skin care expert Emilie Davidson Hoyt has been a serious migraine sufferer since childhood, and is ultra-sensitive to synthetic ingredients and fragrances found in most cosmetics. When she was just a child her father brought her back a lavender soap from a business trip and she found that it relieved much of her pain, so she began placing it beneath her pillow at night to help her relax. It was with this discovery that she gained her passion for natural healing products and the desire to use her experience to help others.
Below Emilie addresses common complexion questions and offers an insiders’ guide to the benefits behind natural healing ingredients. |

Sea Kelp Makes a Splash in Skin Care!
If you’ve spent any time at the beach this summer, you’ve probably come across one of my favorite ingredients for healing and protecting the skin – sea kelp. This marine algae is primarily known for naturally purifying the ocean and, likewise, provides distinct detoxification benefits to the body.
How? Well, our bodies’ structural fluids have the same chemical constitution as deep sea water. So sea kelp naturally draws on its numerous antioxidants to detoxify, balance and protect us inside and out. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, for nutritional and intestinal balance, and, more recently as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial aid on the skin.
Seaweed oil/extract is a genuine natural moisturizer derived from the sea plant. Rich in vitamins and minerals, it imparts a silky texture, smoother, younger looking skin, and softens and strengthens the skin and hair. It’s also known for its detoxifying and toning properties, oxygenating the tissues, stimulating cellular metabolism and may help in decreasing cellulite. Look for it in LATHER’s Balancing Sea Kelp Body Oil, Sea Kelp & Ginseng All-Over Mask, Sea Kelp Body Wash, and Sweet Almond & Sea Kelp Body Lotion.
|
LATHER’s Sea Kelp & Ginseng All Over Mask in particular packs a healthy dose of the algae’s attributes. Sea kelp extract draws out toxins and replenishes lost moisture; sea algae oil provides anti-aging and antioxidant benefits; and bladderwrack extract improves skin’s elasticity and increase hydration. Combined with healing ginseng plus aloe and St. John’s Wort, this mask is powerful yet gentle enough to use on a sunburn, sensitive facial skin, even hair! |

Balancing Sea Kelp Body Oil is another sea kelp star. This luxurious oil draws on highly concentrated seaweed oil to remove impurities and detoxify the skin. Combined with essential oils, vitamins, and minerals, this nourishing formula also promotes tissue regeneration, hydrates skin, and slows premature aging, all with a gentle, warm aroma that inspires well being.
Here's to healthy skin all summer! |

Almond Joy.
Almonds have been gaining popularity as a healthy snack option, touted as a rich source of Vitamin E as well as monosaturated fat - one of the two “good fats” for lowering LDL cholesterol. But almonds have a long history in treating the skin, revered for their hydrating and moisturizing properties.
Almond trees are native to southwest Asia and North Africa, but have been cultivated in countries across the world with temperate climates. Many people are surprised to learn that, botanically, the almond is classified as a fruit, not a nut. In fact, the almond belongs to the same group of plants as the plum, cherry, and peach. But that only partly explains why I’m so sweet on almonds!
Almond Oil is a potent essential oil obtained from the dried kernels of the almond tree. It’s an excellent emollient, softening and soothing to the skin. It also helps to balance the loss and absorption of moisture, making it particularly effective for chapped and irritated skin, soothing while nourishing and protecting. |

|
LATHER uses organic sweet almond oil in a number of products, including our Sweet Almond Exfoliating Crème and Sweet Almond Face Moisturizer. Both are ideal for normal to dry and mature skin, and include a high concentration of antioxidants to protect and heal. Check out our face chart if you’d like to learn more about perfecting your complexion.
We also draw upon almond meal (finely ground up almonds) as a soft and gentle exfoliant. Found in LATHER’s Honey Almond Soap, almond meal perfectly complements soothing honey to treat dry and sensitive skin.

Pure sweet almond oil is gentle enough to use directly on skin, and can be purchased at most health food stores. But since beauty also comes from the inside, I try to make whole almonds a regular part of a healthy diet. Try a quarter-cup three times per week as a snack, mixed with your favorite dried fruits.
Be well, Emilie. |

Lovely Lavender.
Anyone who is familiar with the “LATHER story” may know that the company was inspired, in part, by my love for lavender.
Since childhood, I have suffered from migraine headaches that, at their worst, would affect my ability to speak and see. Doctors were unable to effectively prevent or ease my symptoms, and I grew up trying all sorts of medications and pain relievers. It turned out, however, to be a lavender soap that most effectively eased my pain, and I became interested in how natural healing ingredients could help others.
Lavender Oil is a potent essential oil derived from lavender flowers. It’s emotionally balancing aroma has soothing properties to ease tension, insomnia, stress, and, yes - even headaches. It is also known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as its ability to balance dry or oily skin, making it excellent for all skin types.

|
| LATHER draws on lavender oil for a number of our products, including Oatmeal Lavender Soap which also uses organic oatmeal to treat dry and sensitive skin; Sofian Lavender Whipped Body Crème, a hydrating whip that moisturizes without feeling greasy; and all of the products in our refreshing Lavender Lime collection. |

Lavender Extract, on the other hand, is an extract of the lavender plant from its leaf, flower or stem. Known for its antiseptic properties, and ability to heal and soothe skin conditions such as dry skin (eczema) and acne, it is a key ingredient in LATHER’s Lavender Soothing Baby Wash. Not just for babies, however, the organic infusions of chamomile and marigold, plus oat oil and organic aloe vera, give adults soft, silky smooth skin and hair.
Here are a few of my suggestions on how to incorporate lavender into your life! Try a few drops of oil in a warm bath to help you relax or on a cool compress to soothe headaches. According to legend, Cleopatra used the scent of lavender to seduce Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, so attempt your own aphrodisiac: make your own linen water by adding a drop or two to the water reservoir of your iron, and let the fragrance steam into your sheets.

Renew with Bamboo.
The fastest growing plant in the world, bamboo generates more oxygen than trees and is more environmentally sustainable. With this legitimate, eco-friendly significance, bamboo has become a buzzword in recent years, and is being used more often in beauty products, clothing, and construction. Bamboo was even used to comprise the floor and furniture in our store on Colorado Blvd.!
Bamboo has strong roots in history, however, as many cultures have long celebrated its power: bamboo’s extensive life makes it a Chinese symbol of longevity, while in India it is a symbol of friendship. In Japan, a bamboo forest sometimes surrounds a Shinto shrine as part of a sacred barrier against evil. Several Asian cultures even believe that humanity emerged from a bamboo stem. Talk about a new start! |
|
 |
| LATHER has long relied on the regenerative powers of bamboo to comprise some of our best-selling products. Our Bamboo Lemongrass Foaming Body Scrub draws on Bamboo Stem Powder, natural silica deposits that exist in the walls of the stem. These micronized particles have natural exfoliating properties, and facilitate the removal of dull surface cells, refining skin texture, leaving skin soft and radiant. In LATHER’s Bamboo Scrub, these particles are combined with gentle cleansing agents, herbal extracts, almond proteins, and essential oils to lift away impurities and leave skin supple and moist. |
| |
Extract from the Bamboo Leaf and Stem also delivers therapeutic benefits to the skin. This extract exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, helps to promote cell renewal, and enhances hydration within the dermis. Bamboo Leaf/Stem Extract can be found in all of our Bamboo Lemongrass and Bamboo Crème products for the body, shower, hands, and hair.
This season, let’s all treat ourselves to fresher, younger-looking skin. Check back next month to learn more about LATHER’s commitment to natural ingredients and tips toward living a radiant life.
Be well, Emilie. |

Sick this season? Try natural healing tips from LATHER.
This time of year, everyone I know is getting sick, getting over being sick, or just plain sick of being sick. With holiday travel, the kids back in school, and the changes in temperature, winter can certainly seem like the season of discontent. There are, however, a few steps we can all take to start feeling better. |
| |
First and foremost, wash your hands! Studies have shown that washing hands with soap and water is the most effective method of curtailing the spread of germs and infection. Antibacterial sanitizers kill germs but they often contain chemicals registered by the Environmental Protection Agency as pesticides! There is also concern that overuse of these chemicals can breed bacterial resistance. And as you may have noticed, they can also dry and irritate the skin.
That’s why I set out to create LATHER’s Wasabi Hand Wash Collection. Wasabi has been used for centuries as a natural antibacterial agent, and has a high concentration of potassium, calcium, and vitamin C as well as phytochemicals that strengthen the body’s natural antioxidants. Our Wasabi Hand Washes also contain natural oils and emollients, so the formulation is non-drying and gentle on the skin.

If a cold has already hit, you have many choices in how to treat it. I like to draw on the natural benefits of essential oils to improve symptoms like a stuffy nose or heavy head. Essential oils are derived from aromatic essences of plants, trees, fruits, flowers, and herbs, and have many medicinal properties. Their small molecular size allows for easy absorption, and can be used for inhalation and direct application to the body.
The essential oil of eucalyptus, in particular, is known to improve respiratory infections and open up the sinuses. Try a few drops of LATHER’s Eucalyptus Therapeutic Bath Tonic for an energizing soak, or on a warm washcloth to ease cold symptoms. Or stop by any of our in-store Blending Bars which offer more than 50 essential oils to customize your own personal elixir.
Here’s hoping we all sail through cold and flu season! Check back next month to learn more about LATHER’s commitment to natural ingredients and tips toward living a radiant life.
Be well, Emilie. |
